Where does the name "denim" come from? Denim is derived from "Serge de Nîmes". Nîmes is the name of the city in France where the robust cotton fabric with a diagonal weave was first woven in the 17th century. Two centuries later, the fabric found its way to the USA, where it was made famous by Levi Strauss.
